VON OST NACH WEST – TRADITION TRIFFT INNOVATION

Seit 2015 bringt das Seidenstraße Musikfestival Hamburg zeitgenössische Musik, Multimedia, Volksmusik und Jazz in einen einzigartigen Dialog mit den Traditionen der Seidenstraße. Zum zehnjährigen Jubiläum laden wir Künstler:innen aus aller Welt ein – von Hamburg bis New York, von Iran bis China, von Anatolien bis Indien.

Erlebt drei Tage voller Musik und Multimedia: Gamelan und Jazz, anatolische Psychedelia, persische Rhythmen, zeitgenössische Kompositionen, multimediale Performances und eindrucksvolle VR-Installationen.

Mit dabei sind unter anderem Asya Fateyeva, Lin Chen, Duo NAWA, TrioMUSĀFIR  sowie das Gamelan Sekar Kenanga der Elbphilharmonie Hamburg – ergänzt durch zahlreiche internationale Künstler:innen.

This composer portrait marks 25 years of Tam Thi Pham’s journey in the musical field, including 12 years devoted to contemporary music.
For this concert, she presents a selection of works that trace her path across genres and contexts – through instrumental performance, video and music art. The evening invites the audience into her world of sound, discovery, and imagination. The artists performing in the events are Jana De Troyer,  Bernhard Fograscher, Tam Thi Pham and Jennifer Hymer.

The first event of Hamburg Free-Improv Community will feature the musicians Jan Wegmann, Jana De Troyer, John Hughes, Chad Popple, Tam Thi Pham, Dong Zhou, Robert Klammer, Gregory Büttner, Birgit Ulher, Gunnar Lettow, and Moxi Beidenegl.

The Hamburg Free-Improv Community is a monthly series where musicians, listeners, and open-minded people meet to share the experience of free improvisation. We view improvisation not only as an artistic method, but also as a way of learning, exchanging, and connecting with one another across boundaries.

By bringing together different practices and traditions, we aim to build bridges between genres, generations, and aesthetic approaches, fostering interaction and discourse while opening doors to fresh perspectives.

In this ongoing “laboratory,” we aim to create a respectful and inspiring environment where musicians and audiences can share the joy of collective creativity. Listeners are invited to witness moments of discovery and experience music as it is created in real time.

This idea was inspired by the Neu Berlin Institute of Improvised Music, founded in 2023, and the Neu New York/Vienna Institute of Improvised Music, founded in Vienna in 2005 by Marco Eneidi.

Für die vierte Ausgabe von Life After Art School treffen Nora und Cornelius die Künstlerin Verena Brakonier an ihrem Arbeitsplatz im Gängeviertel.

Verena Brakonier beschreibt sich als Arbeiter*innenkind und hat an der Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen Tanz studiert. Ihre Performances entstehen in enger Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Künstler*innen und thematisieren vor dem Hintergrund ihrer Biographie Themen wie Körper und Klassismus.

In dem Gespräch geht es um die Frage, weshalb und unter welchen Voraussetzungen eine künstlerische Ausbildung schon weit vor dem Studium beginnt, warum es für Verena wichtig war sich von dem im Studium erlernten Handwerk zu befreien und welche Fähigkeiten es braucht, um selbstorganisierte Orte wie das Gängeviertel aufzubauen und zu erhalten.

Für die dritte Ausgabe von Life After Art School treffen Anne und Cornelius die Künstlerin Annika Kahrs auf der Tanzfläche des Clubs arkaoda in Berlin Neukölln. 

Annika hat ihr künstlerisches Studium an der HFBK 2012 abgeschlossen, lebte danach in Hamburg und zog vor wenigen Jahren nach Berlin. Die meisten ihrer Werke, die sie in namhaften Museen und bei diversen Biennalen zeigte, bewegen sich zwischen Video, Musik und Performance. Als wir Annika treffen, befindet sie sich gerade mitten in der Produktion einer neuen Arbeit und der Vorbereitung für eine Solo-Ausstellung im Hamburger Bahnhof. Cornelius und Anne sprechen mit ihr über Clubs als Lernorte, die lange Liste von Absagen auf Bewerbungen und eine ihrer ersten Ausstellungen im Golden Pudel Club.

Über Kailas‘ Weg zur Schauspielerei, Improvisation, die Frage „Was ist Geld?“ und über Leadership und Verhalten in Gruppen

Kailas Mahadevan hat in über 150 Filmprojekten als Schauspieler gearbeitet. Geboren in Hamburg wollte er früh zum Film, hat aber auch stets versucht, sich einen Plan B offenzuhalten. Mit Nicola Wessinghage spricht er über seine Erfahrungen in der Schule, die Suche nach einem Ausbildungsplatz und seinen Weg zur Schauspielausbildung. Es geht um Kailas Respekt vor Improvisation, darum, was Geld und Kapitalismus mit der Gesellschaft machen und gemacht haben. Was Kailas an seinem Beruf gefällt ist, dass er ständig in neue Welten eintauchen kann, dabei etwas lernt und dann weiter in die nächste Welt wandert. Klar also, dass wir mit ihm auch über Lernen sprechen wollten.

For everyone who loves to try out and learn how to create the different kinds of sounds of đàn bầu.

The concert will bring to life a rich and vibrant repertoire of Vietnamese folk music, showcasing the đàn bầu and traditional vocals alongside guitar, piano, cello, and violin. We’re delighted to feature Tam Thi Pham and Sebastian Sprenger from the University of Music and Theater Hamburg, as well as teacher Ngo Tra My from the Vietnam National Academy of Music. They will be joined on stage by talented students from both the University of Music and Theater and the International College of Music, Hamburg.

The “Learning Dan Bau” project was founded and is led by the composer Tam Thi Pham. It started in 2019, is still ongoing and has garnered attention of music lovers not only here in Germany, but also in Vietnam and in the US.  Dan Bau is a traditional Vietnamese instrument and is considered one of the most unique instruments in the world because of its simple structure, special performing style and sound production method. The sound of the Dan Bau comes from the harmonics of its single string, combined with the use of the rod to tense or loosen it and to create different pitches with attractive and unique timbre, so close to the tone of Vietnamese language. The project is aimed at anyone who loves this instrument and wishes to learn to play Dan Bau by themselves.

In the first part of the event, the Dan Bau artists Ngo Tra My and Tam Thi Pham will give a summary of the project, from basic techniques, though folk and traditional music, to new compositions. The artists will also touch on a couple of important music styles, characteristic for different regions of Vietnam.

The second part of the event will be an improvisation section of the guest artist Jan Wegmann, a clarinetist, synthesizer player, and composer, together with two đàn bầu players Tam Thi Pham and Ngo Tra My.

Artists’ bios

 

NGÔ TRÀ MY – Đàn Bầu player, voice

 

Ngô Trà My is a distinguished Đàn Bầu instructor at the Viet Nam National Academy of Music and is recognized as one of Viet Nam’s leading Đàn Bầu soloists. She received a Certificate of Merit as a Đàn Bầu soloist at the National Traditional Professional Music Festival in 1992, earned a Diploma in Đàn Bầu performance in 1994, and obtained a Master’s degree in Music Pedagogy from the Viet Nam National Academy of Music in 2007.

In 2024, she was honored with the national title of Meritorious Artist. Ngô Trà My’s professional endeavors encompass teaching, performing, and researching traditional, experimental, and contemporary music. She is an active member of several prestigious ensembles, including the Viet Nam Traditional Music Orchestra, One Asia Joint Concert, Asia Traditional Orchestra, the international experimental music group The Six Tones, the Viet Nam Contemporary Music Group MMTM, and the Viet Nam Traditional Music Group Thăng Long.

Additionally, she serves as a Music Committee Member for the Asia Traditional Orchestra

project and as a Music Advisor for the C-ASEAN Consonant project. Throughout her career, Ngô Trà My has performed in over 40 countries, participating in numerous significant cultural events such as the International Music Festivals, Viet Nam Culture Days, and the International New Music Festivals. Through these international engagements, she has played a pivotal role in showcasing the unique sounds of the Đàn Bầu and promoting the richness of Vietnamese traditional music on the global stage.

 

Tam Thi Pham

Tam Thi Pham (b. 1990) is a Vietnamese multimedia composer, improviser, and performer based in Hamburg, Germany. By merging technology and tradition, poetics and politics, and the sonic and visual realms, Pham creates an integrated mode of expression where music and performance are indivisible parts.

 

Her work as a composer is all about pushing the boundaries—she loves discovering new sounds, experimenting with different forms of expression, and delving into the performative aspects of music. Central to her work are discovering the unique sounds and extended techniques of the dan bau, a traditional Vietnamese instrument incorporated into her compositions and improvisations.

Her works have been featured at festivals in Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Hungary, Germany, France, and Serbia, demonstrating the wide-reaching appeal of her innovative compositions.
