Nam Mái: a tale of a Vietnamese traditional piece and the decolonization of the Western guitar
This lecture will tell the story of how the western guitar was adapted to Vietnamese performance practice, as well as show examples of how Nam Mái, a song in the Tuồng theatre repertoire, were brought together with experimental music practices in the multimedia project Seven Stories. With demonstrations on the Vietnamese electric guitar, Stefan Östersjö will provide examples of hybrid musical practices, and of how these are connected to the colonial history in the south of Vietnam.
